The game does not use a minimap or a world map; you can purchase a drawn local map of an area (Khorinis City or an island map) which is a viewable inventory item making the game a bit more realistic, but the overall, navigational experience would have been far more immersive if a telescope, compass and possibly a pen or pencil item for making notes and marks on your map were available.
Ultimately, Gothic falls into the realm of game arch-types like Elder Scrolls effortlessly and holds its own easily as well. The series started out roughly around the time that the earliest Elder Scrolls installments were rolling out and while Elder Scrolls is classic Gothic is far more advanced in many ways bordering simulation while Elder Scrolls seemed to target the 'arcade' gameplay --the two (Gothic & Elder Scrolls) cover the gambit together as a book-end set where everything else falls within or outside of.

Had issues with game save file corruption numerous times and after getting fed up uninstalled the community patches & kits as well as all texture packs proceeding with a re-installed, vanilla Gothic 2 run that has not encountered any issues what-so-ever and am almost back to level 8. Prior to vanilla was not able to make it past the 13th day (in-game-world time) or level 8. Re-installed G2 in Windows 7 compatibility mode as administrator to my game drive (usb tethered) and set the game executable to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode as administrator via Gothic2.exe file properties dialog and its been running like a champ since. I also edited the Gothic.ini file (in notepad) making the following changes:

You'll replace the comments for zVidResFullscreenX & zVidResFullscreenY with actual numeric values (your real screen width and height values) and the bits per pixel color depth indicated by the line zVidResFullscreenBPP should be changed from 16 to 32 for any newer monitors unless you're okay with 16 bit color (32 bit will allow for better transparency effects generally --especially nice if you plan to override in-game settings with your graphics card management software).
Aside from the edits mentioned (Gothic2.exe compatibility and Gothic.ini file tweaks) everything is running stock/out-of-the-box in the newest update (1903) to Windows 10 64bit. cannot verify that results will be similar for Windows 1903 32bit systems, but as a standard rule of thumb the game runs in 32bit mode anyway and should do so amicably.
My Gothic2 was purchased and downloaded using the Amazon Digital Game/Software installer service and was fairly fast and could be paused and resumed (incremental download) without negative incident or impact on the game files' integrity. One gripe I have with it is that the download destination directory should be configurable prior to actually streaming the download eliminating the need to pause the download (kind of a grade school level flub there --you're in the big leagues now Amazon-- fix it).
