In this first episode, I talk about that classic adventure, B2 Keep on the Borderlands! Have a peek at the very first printing, some art differences, and a surprising fact or two about this. Keep on the borderlands is a wonderful adventure. But I'm not impressed with the quality of pdf at all. It's almost unreadable. Even the scan version of 'Search in the Unknown' is MUCH better. Awesome and terrible! The Keep on the Borderlands was often the starting point of adventure into the world of Dungeons & Dragons for most. As basic as the D & D Basic Set it came with, The Keep.. was never intended to be great literature, even so it wasn't even a particularly good game. It was, however, a useful tool for the beginner. And boy, was I a beginner..
Confusing to a young, undeveloped mind, who didn't understand that this was meant to be a framework for adventure and not a fu

Where Rolling and Playing Begins: The Keep on the Borderlands
Odds are, your first tabletop roleplay encounter was Dungeon's and Dragon's, 'Keep on the Borderlands' so is it the best module ever? Nay-nay! Dungeon magazine ranked it 7th (in 2004), but its a contender for most nostalgic.
In childlike fashion, let's consider the art first. Jim Roslof's impressionistic cover--by impressionistic I mean, compositional nightmare--wouldn't strike most as the work of the TSR Art Director. The tree has a t

The classic Dungeons & Dragons module
3 December 2011
So, I have reviewed the original box set and now I come to the first Dungeons and Dragons module that I ever owned. This is a classic module, and pretty much all of the roleplayers of my generation will fondly remember it. It is not a great module, it has no real quest in it, and if it is to be run properly, the dungeon master does have a lot of work to do. It was not until the third module in the series that there was an actual quest. How

This module seemed to start every, 'Let's get back into D&D' campaign. No need for a plot device here. There are Caves, and they are full of Chaos. Never mind that the chaotic caves have well organized defense plans. 'BREE-YARK!'
5 stars for nostalgia's sake.

Amazing and revolutionary for its time, still good enough to beat 99% of modern adventures, but everything it has done has since been improved, sharpened to a keen edge.

This was the first D&D adventure I was introduced to, and it remains for me a kind of model of the “best” possible dungeon-crawl for that game. It is also deliberately written as an introductory dungeon for new Dungeon Masters and includes some good advice for first-time DMs on running a campaign. It’s not especially sophisticated or clever, but it establishes a good baseline of what to expect from D&D.
The title is interesting, in that it describes the “home base” from which the adventur

The one thing that confused me about this module: the map on the inside of the cover is not labeled. The first time I read through it I assumed the map was for The Keep as the Keep is outlined first. It wasn't until I came to the page with a map of the Keep - confusingly placed in the Caves of Chaos section - that I realized I had been using the wrong map as reference.
I could have missed it but asterisks are always left unresolved. I would come across one and look for the note it referred to but

The quintessential low level adventure / campaign starter.
Its not great but its not horrible for an old school D&D module. I think it was pretty advanced for its time- not really a railroad adventure, a developed open setting (the Keep) that the characters could explore and interact with its varied inhabitants. The Caves of Chaos were a collection of opposing monsters in close confines, but they were separated by terrain and the author did attempt to provide a somewhat plausible explanation on how this was possible, as well as discussed the possibi..more

As is often the case with these old modules, you will find a lot more content herein than its page count would lead you to believe. This is one of the very first module I ever played and therefore, my rating might be biased, but I think that no matter the rule set you are using, this is a good example of an adventure adapted to beginner GMs.
The first part of the module provides guidelines on how to run the adventure and how to add your own material (end of the book). The second part presents the

Classic D&D module. The open, 'sandbox' nature of the setting makes it suitable to drop into almost any campaign. I was well chuffed to find a copy for $2.50 at Half-Price Books. They've started putting collectible prices on their old RPG books but every once in awhile you can still get a bargain.
First actual module I ever played. Jared Craigs was a wicked DM with the perfect DIY heavy metal mural covered basement to drink soda in while slaughtering kobalds.

My first adventure module as a dungeon master. I liked playing this basic dungeon quest as it helped newer players learn the game.
I have no idea how to review this. It's an 'introductory module' for the Basic D&D game from 1980. I owned it 35 years ago or so, but I don't remember that my middle school D&D group ever played the whole thing. We may have played a single session, but since 'Advanced' D&D came out, we didn't want anything to do with 'Basic' D&D. I bought a PDF copy recently and read through it for the nostalgia value.
As a piece of fiction, it's terrible; but that's not why it exists. As a fantas

I don't recall ever playing this module during my gaming career but we worshipped it by name. I have played in many adventures which were influenced by Keep on the Borderlands. It's a death trap and a classic of old school fantasy role playing.

This was my very first D&D adventure as it came in the box set. Five stars for nostalgia. After all, this was where it all began for me. Three stars for quality and monster ecology plausibility. But as a starter adventure/dungeon crawl, it would be hard to improve on it.
A Classic good time

I admit that this was a nostalgia trip fueled by the memories of tearing open a boxed set, devouring a clearly written and evocative rule book in a single sitting, and then becoming thoroughly confused by a skeletal and entirely open-ended adventure module that forces a likely novice DM to hit the ground running from the very start. (A module whose background is essentially 'We're going to go beat up monsters. Everyone okay with that?')

Meh.
That's the best I can say about a book that is about the first, ostensibly most important, D&D module I'd ever read.
It gets two stars, not 1, for the sheer fact that it covers such a critical touch point in the history of gaming. But I scanned, skimmed, and delayed reading this because it was just so weakly written.
Furthermore, the game mechanics were REALLY poorly represented. Did the author ever even PLAY D&D? Seems not!
What a travesty to have wasted this idea on such a poor atte

This book is super trash, but I still liked it. Do not read this novel as a novel. Read it as the most glorious playthrough of the Keep on the Borderlands module a D&D group could ever possibly pull off. Trust me, you'll enjoy the book way more.
The story starts off with a good old fashioned caravan ambush and ends with a whole lotta Caves of Chaos. Instead of character development you'll get normal adventuring stuff like divvying up loot, hiring retainers (they run 26 people deep), and of c

Keep on the Borderlands is the sixth of the Greyhawk Classics novels. It is similar in format and tone to the others in the series, where the author crafts a narrative around an established D&D module. Like the others in the series this is an easy read without a lot of unnecessary plot complexities or subplots. The adventure follows two mercenary leaders and their bands as they join forces to rid the Keep’s surrounding lands of different evils.

I don't know what I was expecting from a novelization of an old-school sandbox D&D module, but I probably got it.
The first half of the book gives you the impression that the author is going to try to develop some characters and some motivation, but then somewhere around the midway point the characters start raiding the local church for clerics and the keep's dungeon for thieves and from that point on you're reading a play-by-play mêlée runthrough of the Caves of Chaos.
(If a play-by-play mêlé

Not up to par with the other Greyhawk novels I've read so far. The adventures and dungeon crawls were on the bland side (my old D&D group enjoyed many adventures far better than those within this book). None of the characters was particularly likeable and when one of them dies it was a shrug of the shoulders 'oh well' moment.
Unless one already has this book, I can't recommend this one; unfortunately for me, I had already bought this one in the past and just got around to reading it.

It was fun to be the translator of the spanish edition.
The story is a good adventure. If you are a Greyhawk fan, you'll discover the story is really soft.
If you just want a good adventure of sword & sorcery, then this is your book.
I enjoyed the book overall. A few concepts for one of the characters was really out of place but otherwise the story unfolded well.
Ru Emerson’s Keep on the Borderlands is her novelization of the original Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set module of the same name. Though I have not played D&D since the last millennium, I have memories of a 12 year old nerd sitting on the floor in the living room and adventuring forth from the Keep to clear the Caves of Chaos with his friends - Good times. That would have been about 1000 years ago in 1982.

Often, novels based on D&D adventure modules feel a bit stilted. However, the problems with this book go far beyond that.
First, it was rather poorly edited. However, I can overlook typos. Other books in this series (the recent Greyhawk books) have some typos, but not quite this many.
The main problem is that the storyline meanders about. This may be due to the transition from module to novel, but the central task of the author is to create a compelling story that fits within the confines of

Ok, I tried, I REALLY tried to finish this book. And I couldn't. The ONLY thing REMOTELY like ANY game, let alone Greyhawk was the looting of every and all dead bodies after each fight. Except the poor kobolds slaughtered in their own home. They didn't have anything worth taking. Ok, I know, kobolds are evil, but that doesn't give our 'heroes' the right to go into their home and slaughter them all. The kobolds fought, but to DEFEND themselves from the home invaders. This was a fun read. The writer has skill, but the story was basically a D&D adventure module. I knew that going in so I wasn't disappointed in that regard, I was just hoping that the translation might have brought out a better tale. Fast read and worth it if you are an old school D&Der.

This book might be more interesting if you read it as a 'game' rather than a novel.. Unfortunately, I can't get into a game mindset when reading these sort of books. :( I'm just not used to this style.

A true adventure. This book brought the essence of the game to life in my opinion. It showed the basics of bringing a group together with both player and non-player characters after finding a misson, getting prepared and showing the hit and miss situations that would happen in an actual game.
